New Kingdom Placemarks:
The
New Kingdom started when after a series of wars Pharaoh Ahmose defeated the
Hyksos rulers and reunited Egypt.
During
the New Kingdom Thebes grew in importance as the Pharaohs of the 18th dynasty
were closely related to the cult of the God Amun (Karnak Temple).
At
the start of the 18th dynasty the pharaohs and other high officials
were buried in the Dra Abu el-Naga cemetery at West Thebes.
See:
On
the west bank of the Nile the pharaohs of the 18th Dynasty built their mortuary temples
while their actual Tombes were in the Valley of the Kings.
The
18th dynasty had many pharaohs that still hold our interest: Pharaoh
Hatshepsut, Pharaoh Akhenaten, and Pharaoh Tutankhamun.
During
the reign of Pharaoh Akhenaten the sun disk "Aten" became the only God
in Egypt and the capital (Ankhetaten) was moved to a place
which we now known as Amarna.
